Interests & Activities
When not teaching, lecturing, or writing, David often appears on the semi- professional opera and musical theater stage. Before moving to Seattle, David performed lead roles on both the east and west coasts. Among his favorites are Ravenal in Showboat, Tony in West Side Story, and Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady. In Seattle, he played Mr. Lundquist in the Light Opera's production of Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music, and was the tenor among five talents in the Crepe De Paris' summer cabaret production of By Sondheim. In Tacoma, he played the Minstrel in Little Theater's production of Once Upon a Mattress. For four years, he performed in Scott Warrender's Washingtonians. More recently, David has performed musical theater songs, American Songbook standards, and jazz tunes in various Seattle venues with his fine accompanist, Martin Buff. They frequently mounted full-sized cabaret shows at the former French restaurant, Crepe de Paris in Rainier Square. .
David and Martin's final performance at the Crepe de Paris was "The Boys Do the Girls," featuring songs made famous by Judy Garland, Ella Fitzgerald, and Barbra Streisand. The show debuted in November of 2007 and, due to the overwhelming response, was remounted in April & May of 2008. The show played to enthusiastic audiences and critics raved. Milton Hamlin of the SGN called it a "charming show," "a hit," and declared that "it has winner written all over it!" David and Martin also produced an album containing all of the songs performed in the show. To purchase "The Boys Do the Girls" Show Album, please order by e-mail. The price of the CD is $15.00 with a $3.00 handling fee. David is currently working on a musical song cycle, "Songs from an Unmade Bed" - an 18-song one-man show that first opened off-Broadway - and hopes to perform it soon at a Seattle-based theater company. |
David and Martin's first recording, "A Little Broadway," featured famous musical theater pieces from traditional and contemporary Broadway shows.
They have made a large selection of those pieces available below for your listening pleasure.
